Is there a more pathetic scourge? Although I enjoy the personal attacks on news forums, I don't understand why a person would assimilate a sports team's colors/logo into their identity.

At the end of the day, aren't these morons simply spectators?

How sad.

Really, it's not like they played for the team or anything. Community pride is so old it's not even worth having in this day and age.

The roll of self identification it plays to the masses is nothing short of astonishing. To define yourself by an arbitrary grouping of people near the location of your residents is a quaint notion. Such antiquated ideas will never allow for the progress of humanity to truly achieve a level at which it can dominate the natural order of such things. If you truly wish to be apart of the huddled mass of the proletariat then you should simply assign yourself a place in that class that will live up to your expectations.

Sounds like someone got himself a word a day calendar.

I agree

I agree (With the sports fan thing I mean, not the "word a day" thing)

I believe that we can chalk all forms of regional pride, up to the basic tribal mentality of hunter-gather times. Sports is one of the best examples of this, the other, of course, is patriotism. The parallels you can draw between these behaviors and the primal tribal mentality is pretty sad (and the people most likely to exhibit these behaviors, are the least likely to see this). Though, I must admit that these attitudes did help to keep our ancestors alive.

Despite the fact that human psychology may not have changed much in the last 10,000 years, our society has. The progression of technology and culture seems to be increasingly in favor of individualism; especially from a geographical standpoint. The type of attitude exhibited by sports fans is becoming more of an obstacle, in the path of progress, rather than the asset which helped us to continue to survive. Any type of multinational organization, or project or endeavor, has had to contend with this issue in one way, or another. I believe this is why the flaws in the regional pride mentality are becoming increasingly apparent.

The global economy has little use for such old fashion sentiments.
